  Ludovico figlio ed erede del sovrano di Turingia. \nSposa a quattordici an
 ni, madre a quindici, restò vedova a 20.\nElisabetta aveva tre figli. Dopo 
 il primogenito Ermanno vennero al mondo due\nbambine: Sofia e Gertrude, que
 st'ultima data alla luce già orfana di padre. \nAlla morte del marito, Elis
 abetta si ritirò a Eisenach, poi nel castello di Pottenstein\nper scegliere
  infine come dimora una modesta casa di Marburgo dove fece\nedificare a pro
 prie spese un ospedale, riducendosi in povertà. \nIscrittasi al terz'ordine
  francescano, offrì tutta se stessa agli ultimi, visitando gli ammalati\ndu
 e volte al giorno, facendosi mendicante e attribuendosi sempre le mansioni\
 npiù umili. La sua scelta di povertà scatenò la rabbia dei cognati che arri
 varono\na privarla dei figli. \nMorì a Marburgo, in Germania il 17 novembre
  1231.\nÈ stata canonizzata da Papa Gregorio IX nel 1235.\n
